Video Gambling Machines Moving Forward in Chicago
Video gambling machines are progressing towards availability in Chicago's bars and restaurants after surpassing an important milestone this week. Elected officials communicated with state regulators following inaction from Mayor Brandon Johnson.
The state of Illinois began accepting applications on Thursday afternoon from businesses interested in operating the gambling machines. This development occurred after City Clerk Anna Valencia informed the Illinois Gaming Board on Tuesday that the city had legalized these machines.
Mayor Johnson had delayed sending the notice for several weeks, seemingly aiming to pressure aldermen into reconsidering the legalization plan that was incorporated into the 2026 city budget, which they approved in December without his support.
